From Environmental Education to Medical Billing
Many people think they know the background of a medical billing professional: someone who loves numbers and grew up with a calculator in one hand and a notepad in the other. But my first office didn’t have a desk, rolling chair, or an ignored house plant.
I started working in the woods, swamps, and beaches from the Southeast to the Rockies as an environmental educator. Teaching adults and children in hands-on, experiential settings filled a need in my life: to play outside and educate people about the world around them.
In 2009, I decided that I wanted a change. While at a party, I met someone who owned a medical billing service for mental health professionals. My office at the time was near several therapist’s offices, so I was familiar with how they operated professionally.
My partner, Lisa Riehl and I started MindEase with a simple goal in mind: helping therapists realize their dreams by removing the stress of billing and dealing with insurance companies. We started off working with people in our professional network, and grew from there just by word of mouth.
As MindEase grew and developed into a business that filled a need in the industry, I realized I had even more to give. Using the experience I’d gained building MindEase into a company that retained clients for over 10 years, I could help other medical billers create billing services poised to achieve similar success.
